Guide to CCH Training

This guide has been written by trainees, for trainees, with an aim to support equitable, high quality Community Child Health (CCH) training wherever you work. It brings together practical advice, collective experience and national perspectives to help ensure we are all training with clear expectations, shared standards and transparent guidance.

Guide to the CCH Curriculum

A working group of 27 trainees explored each of the learning outcomes and collated top tips and examples for how these competencies can be achieved, including recommended resources to read and reflect on. Additionally, you can find lists of organisations that provide education, courses, and resources relevant to each of the five learning outcomes in the Online Learning Library. 

Guide to the Generic Paediatric Curriculum

This guide offer practical guidance on how generic competencies may be achieved, helping ensure all community paediatric trainees start with a shared understanding of the learning opportunities and resources that may be available and relevant.  Examples are split into what experiences can be gained from acute and community settings to reflect the unique dual training experience of CCH trainees.

ÌÇÐÄlogo Training Events

There are virtual ÌÇÐÄlogo training events every Wednesday, all of which are recorded. Find details and recordings of previous events below.  

Monthly Virtual CBD Clinics by CCH Consultants (Every 1st Wednesday 1-2pm)

Three START-style cases will be discussed by consultants or final year trainees with an offer for a consultant post.  Structured approaches for managing such cases will be explored, covering both the clinical and non-clinical aspects, just as you would be expected to do in the START assessment.

Monthly Virtual CCH Lightning Learning by National Multi-disciplinary Experts (Every 2nd Wednesday 1-1.30pm)

These 30-minute virtual sessions focus on our CCH sub-speciality learning outcomes on a rotational basis, with the specific topic within these voted on by trainees through a monthly poll. This has enabled us to be more responsive to our trainees' learning needs, ensure everyone benefits from teaching by leading experts and addresses the isolation felt by many CCH residents when working in smaller and more remote teams. Monthly Virtual CCH Population Health Problems by Public Health Colleagues and Multi-agency Experts (Every 3rd Wednesday 1-2pm)

Recognising public health as the greatest unmet training need of CCH trainees nationally, one of the new initiatives is to offer monthly public health training. In these sessions, a CCH case-based scenario will be discussed and lead into a themed public health teaching session by public health colleagues. The scenario and training resources used will be shared with attendees after to empower CCH SPRs to deliver population health teaching locally to paediatric colleagues and students and can be found here (coming soon).

Research Ready: Journal Club and Skills Sessions (Every 4th Wednesday 1-2pm)

Even if you are not pursuing an academic career, we all need to be able to assess and navigate claims in the digital world of information, especially when meeting families who may ask about emerging research. Many roles also demand research competencies and these skills can help develop services in many ways. These session aims to boost confidence in both research quality evaluation and involvement if your patients are invited to participate in a research study. 

There will be skills taught taught by academics with a community paediatric interest, with examples of how this can be applied in CCH. There will also be thirty minutes dedicated to critically reviewing a topical journal article together. There will be space to ask lots of questions.

Quarterly Virtual National CCH Study Mornings by National Multi-disciplinary Experts

With the centralisation of services comes new challenges for trainees in terms of getting sufficient experience to feel confident and competent in that area. Quarterly tailored national study mornings have been set up to address this and cover the harder to reach areas of the curriculum such as palliative care, public health, mental health and sexual abuse. Annual Face-Face National Training Day - ‘How to be Brilliant’ by our Children & Young People

This will be a new annual face-to-face training day for all CCH/Neurodisability trainees held every May/June, launching in 2026 on neurodiversity and neurodisability. The day will be entirely led and delivered by our children, young people and their families, with support and input from the multidisciplinary professionals involved in their journeys. The event will give our patients a platform to share their lived experiences of the conditions we commonly see, guide trainees on what good care really looks like including what makes the biggest differences, and inspire us with their ideas for improving services to drive quality improvement. Registration will be available on the events page from January.

Improving Child Health in Communities: QI Collaborative

To provide CCH trainees with an opportunity to develop the skills required to run effective population health QI projects and facilitate multi-site pilots across different demographics, this network has been created.  Each September there will be a launch event to share knowledge on useful tools to help develop ideas around a given theme, chosen annually.  Teams will then form to work on multi-site trainee-led projects over the year with the support of a population health supervisor.  Launch events are held every September and can be booked here. 

ÌÇÐÄlogo Buddies for Prospective Trainees 

To support all trainees on their journey from applying to CCH through to settling into training we will be piloting a buddy scheme pairing up residents applying to our subspeciality with existing ST5-7 CCH trainees who will be able to offer informal peer support.  For existing CCH trainees it's a chance to get feedback on how they've supported juniors, for new starters it's a friendly face in their region to ask all those 'silly’ questions to with insider knowledge of how things work - which we know is so valuable when starting out and you often don't know anyone!

This will launch at our 'Applying to CCH Subspeciality' recruitment event held at the end of September annually and information on how existing trainees can get involved will be shared on the National ÌÇÐÄlogo Network every autumn.   If you are interested in being a buddy or having a buddy, or you can email [email protected] to register your interest at any time.
